It's appropriate that HBO Sports is showing an all-star documentary about Curt Flood during a week when baseball fans are celebrating the game's all-stars.
Flood's major-league career doesn't compare with many of today's stars or with many Hall of Famers. But Flood's stance — away from the batter's box — changed the major leagues, which is pointed out in "The Curious Case of Curt Flood." The show's premiere is Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Still, Flood's impact on baseball was undeniably enormous. He was the first major-league player to challenge baseball's long-standing reserve clause.
Flood's challenge paved the way for free agency in baseball and other major professional sports. Flood, who died in January 1997, took his landmark fight all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
