Destined to Witness (Massaquoi) |
|
This is an almost unbelievable autobiographical account about the son of a Liberian man and German woman -- and his childhood and youth in Germany during the Nazi era. Apparently, he survived partly because he was so singular and isolated, that the Nazi racial extermination plans (being focused originally on communities) had not quite reached the final individual level that would have eliminated some particularly visible persons like himself
There are, of course, some hoaxes in the literature about the period, such as Fragments by "Binjamin Wilkomirski" -- which purports to tell how the author survived Majdanek as a child, written in a lyric emotional manner, without very much concrete detail
Massaquoi's incredible story is quite detailed and includes various photos of the author as a child and young adult, together with some photographs from his later life, when he apparently had a successful career as an editor with Ebony
