I highly recommend The Color of Lightning - Paulette Jiles |

Just finished this book and I can't say enough good about it. It's a great adventure, in the same vein as Lonesome Dove, about a free black man who travels with his family to from KY to TX in 1863 to start a freight hauling business. His wife and children are captured by Comanche and Kiowa and he sets off to rescue them. It is based on oral histories of the post-Civil War years in North Texas.

1. Thanks! I keep meaning to read Jiles' "Enemy Women," but I haven't yet. |

Maybe I'll be able to settle into this one instead.

2. Hi, BI. I also read Enemy Women and thought it was good, but |

The Color of Lightning was much more compelling, IMHO. If you like historical fiction, I highly recommend Elizabeth Crook's The Night Journal. Happy reading--keeps us grounded, no?
