I've never heard anyone suggest such a thing. However, it seems as plausible as some popular conspiracy theories.

You see, the reason the Plumbers were bugging the DNC headquarters was to snoop on Nixon's communications with DNC leaders. The bugging was actually successful, and they did pick up Nixon talking about coming over to the D side. They confronted him with that, and then backstabbed him during the coverup.
After all, by opening up China, he'd gone soft on communism, and with the wage and price freeze, he'd proven himself a socialist.
