RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- Ramallah Prime Minister Salam Fayyad and the British Minister for International Development Alan Duncan signed an agreement Thursday to provide £262 million <$420 million> UK aid to Palestine between 2011-2014.
The aid agreement will contribute £100 million <$160 million> towards supporting the Palestinian Authority's budget and other funds will be allocated to development projects, technical assistance, projects supporting civil society and as part of humanitarian aid programs.
Fayyad stated that the agreement reflects the strong relations between the two governments and that the aid will support efforts being made by the PA to establish an independent Palestinian state on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The agreement comes at a time in which the PA is striving to overcome a financial crisis. Fayyad called on Arab donor countries to fulfill their financial commitments to the support the PA budget, which must be able to meet the needs of its citizens.
