The cops who investigate the incident might figure it out. A lot would depend on your prior criminal history and the legal status of your firearm. I think you'll find that many people who would "get in an argument with some dude and pop a cap in his ass" will also have a history that doesn't bear much close scrutiny.

Yeah, better to just take one for the team, right? Just throw yourself on the mugger's mercy in the interest of the general welfare.

2. I have used the fire extinguisher example in discussions on the subject of concealed carry.

An acquaintance once wondered why I carry a licensed pistol. She asked, "Have you ever been mugged?". I replied, "No. My house has never burned down, either. But I own fire extinguishers." Same principle.

Carbon tetrachloride was a common cleaning fluid, and up until the '60s also used as a fire extinguishing agent.

In 1910, The Pyrene Manufacturing Company of Delaware filed a patent for a using carbon tetrachloride to extinguish fires. The liquid vaporized and extinguished the flames by inhibiting the chemical chain reaction of the combustion process in a manner similar to modern Halon. (It was an early 20th century presupposition that the fire suppression ability of carbon tetrachloride relied on oxygen removal.) In 1911, they patented a small, portable extinguisher that used the chemical. This consisted of a brass bottle with an integrated handpump which was used to expel a jet of liquid toward the fire. As the container was unpressurized, it could be easily refilled after use. Carbon tetrachloride was suitable for liquid and electrical fires and the extinguishers were often fitted to motor vehicles. Their use was widespread aboard WW2 US aircraft.

Carbon tetrachloride has practically no flammability at lower temperatures. Under high temperatures in air, it forms poisonous the poisonous gas, phosgene. Phosgene was one of the predominant gasses used during World War One. The fact that high temperatures cause it to react to produce phosgene made it especially hazardous when used against fires in confined spaces. It has killed people.

It was banned for environmental concerns along with a host of other CFC's, etc as "ozone depleting chemicals." It was NOT banned for killing people as a fire extinguisher. HALON based fire extinguishing systems have always excelled and controlling fuel and electrical fires. One of their advantages is they do not contaminate the equipment being protected, as would a dry chemical extinguisher.

Like a great many other things misused by people who disregard instructions. They make personal injury lawyers rich and the rest of us suffer inane safety warnings like, "Do not attempt to stop the chain on the chainsaw with your genitals." All this because juries feel compelled to reward stupid people with other peoples' money.

The underlying premise to the Darwin Awards was neatly summed up by Robert Heinlein.
