A Chesapeake man phoned police Monday after seeing a suspicious package with wires sticking out, at the back of a store at an area strip mall. The threat turned out to be a false alarm.
Both State Police and firefighters were sent to the grocery store of an area strip mall around 8:30 a.m. to investigate the device, described as a "sophisticated" parcel.
The package turned out to be a box full of Christmas lights. Contractor Thomas Walker says he spotted a box with wires sticking out of the end. It prompted him to call authorities.
Police evacuated the mall and a nearby apartment complex and brought in robots to demolish the device but eventually found it to be harmless.
