RICHMOND: PACKAGE CONTAINING SUSPICIOUS ITEMS AT BULK MAIL CENTER PROMPTS EVACUATION

The United States Postal Service San Francisco Bulk Mail Center located at 2501 Rydin Road in Richmond is closed and all employees have been evacuated while police, the bomb squad, firefighters and post office officials investigate a suspicious package that was found this morning, according to Richmond Police Department Lt. Mark Gagan.
Richmond police received word at 8:37 a.m. today of a package containing at least three hand grenades at the mail center, which is the receiving center for mail in the region, Gagan reported.

Police received word at 7:01 a.m. from a resident in the 2300 block of Maine Avenue in Richmond's Cortez/Stege District reporting a hand grenade that had been launched into his {home}"
"The call was regarding the fact that somebody had thrown a pineapple fragmentation grenade through the window and it landed on the resident's lap,'' Gagan said. "It did not go off, it did not explode.''
