Suspicious package found at Hope Street Academy

The City of Topeka Fire Department responded to a report of an envelope containing a letter and suspicious substance, shortly after 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at a local school (Hope Street Academy, 1900 SW Hope Street).
The fire department’s Hazardous Materials Response Unit was able to quickly respond to this incident and determine the suspicious substance as non-hazardous. Iit was also determined that the substance did not pose a threat to anyone who had come into contact with it. Although the suspicious substance was not hazardous, the content of the letter had a negative connotation to it, perceived by officials to be threatening. Therefore, appropriate officials including the U.S. Postal Service and City of Topeka Police Department were notified of the document.
At the time of this release the City of Topeka Police Department was continuing to investigate this incident.
