ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Turkey's army chief said Thursday
the military had launched several “large scale” offensives
against separatist Kurdish rebels in the predominantly
Kurdish southeastern region.
The offensives were launched to coincide with spring, when
the rebels intensify attacks on Turkey, with melting snow
making mountain passes easier to access, said Gen. Yasar
Buyukanit, the head of Turkey's powerful military.
The announcement came as Turkey has been intensifying
pressure on Iraq and the United States to crack down on
the rebels who launch raids from bases in northern Iraq.
