ALGIERS, Algeria -- Suspected Islamic militants attacked a police checkpoint
in Algeria with rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns Sunday, killing five
officers and wounding three others, according to a newspaper report.
Separately, a bus hit two land mines west of the capital, triggering explosions
that left three Algerians and a Russian dead, as well as five others wounded,
authorities said.
-snip-In Sunday's attack, assailants are said to have fired a grenade on a police sport
utility vehicle at a key highway crossroads as officers were changing shifts,
setting the vehicle ablaze, the daily Liberte reported.
A second SUV came under machine-gun fire, Liberte reported in an article to be
published Monday, citing witness accounts.

DUBAI, March 5 (Reuters) - An al Qaeda wing claimed responsibility on Monday
for an attack in Algeria that killed seven policemen on Sunday.
"Our (fighters) conducted an attack on the municipal guard in Tizi Ouzou and
killed a number of infidels," Al Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb said
in a statement posted on a militant Web site.
-snip-The group, previously known as the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat,
claimed last month an attack that killed six civilians in Algeria.
