State health officials are trying to contact anyone who attended a funeral last last month in East Providence because a woman who was there is infected with a bacterium that can cause meningitis.
State health director Doctor David Gifford says the bacteria was detected yesterday in the woman who lives in an assisted-living facility.
The bacteria is spread through saliva and the infected woman was hugging and kissing people at the funeral. She is being treated and is recovering.
Health officials are urging anyone who attended the funeral for Mary Nelson at Watson Funeral Home to contact the Health Department for treatment.
