Greek Left parties greeted the European Union (EU), European Central Bank (ECB) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) auditors in Athens on Monday afternoon with a new wave of protests over the austerity measures introduced by the government this year to face a severe economic crisis that threatened Greece with default.
The delegation of EU-ECB-IMF "troika" experts launched a new round of deliberations with Greek officials, starting with Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou, in Athens on Monday in the framework of regular inspections of Greek economy, before the release of the next tranche of financial aid to Athens in December.
"We will answer to war with war ... The EU-IMF support mechanism strangles people. It helps only lenders and major business corporations who are responsible for the Greek debt," said Greek Communist Party (KKE) General Secretary Aleka Papariga while addressing a crowd of thousands in front of the Finance Ministry building opposite to the Greek parliament in the center of Athens.
