That's the correct pronounciation.
WH always thought "Chain-ee" sounded stronger, more manly.
Matthews actually corrected himself.
Say 'em both aloud. Pretty funny.

... in fact, I used to manage a Putt Putt golf course in Casper where little Elizabeth and Mary used to come and play miniature golf at least a couple of times a week.
A Democrat way back then (I'm Green, now), we had other very choice names for 'Cheney' ... and this was even before he got elected to the House.
I'm too much of a gentleman to repeat those names.

He said it just got sort of changed to "Chay-nee" over the years. I always pronounce it Cheney, because it rhymes with words like meanie and beanie. Chay-nee doesn't rhyme with anything.
