We've got the agenda... here's what we do with it. |
|
Bush announced his initial agenda today: beginning the destruction of Social Security; reducing rights for legal redress via the court system; and introducing some kind of private savings account health insurance for the wealthy and healthy.
If the Dems had balls and leadership they'd organize a counter-agenda. They'd invite think tanks to propose initiatives in every area that Bush is touting. For every proposal/bill that the Repubs introduce the Dems should have an alternative. Then, when the debate begins, Dems can point to the strong points of their proposals and contrast them with the predictably corrupt and weak protections of the Bush proposals.
There's really no problem with thinking that everyone should agree on every proposal because every proposal has a snowball's chance of passage.
The point is to avoid the obstructionist label and to put the Repubs on the defensive by offering progressive alternatives.
Of course, apparently we'll have to wait a generation for a really proactive, aggressive, innovative leadership dedicated to winning. I thought that Daschle was weak. Then I got an eyeful of Harry Reid.
