Poll question: Now that they have complete control, will they banish abortion? |
|
Edited on Wed Nov-03-04 06:14 PM by Truth Hurts A Lot
It'll be interesting to see if Bush & his Republican mates will actually try to ban abortion. I think they were just giving the issue lip service--after all, who will pay when a woman is forced to carry to term a baby she doesn't want? Who will pay the medical costs? Who will provide for the baby when/if it's born?
ETA: It'll be interesting to see how the evangelicals and others respond when they finally get it through their f*cking heads that moral issues CANNOT be legislated. Maybe then they'll begin voting for issues that actually affect their own lives.

4. But with complete control of all 3 branches of government |
|
How will they play off the failure to ban abortion to their constituents? Ooops... we forgot to ban it while we were in power??! Vote us back in and we'll change the law?

As someone who remembers the not wonderful days of yesteryear when abortion was illegal, let me assure you it will NEVER be banished....women always got abortions, just not legal ones. We know how to do them and we will continue no matter what. See Emily's List...that started as an underground abortion referral network.

14. Yes abortions always happened, if your rich they were safe |
|
case in point when my mom (pre roe vs wade I think about 71) thought she was "with child" she went and saw her ob/gyn. Told him she did not want it, too old, had enough kids etc. Guess what if you could pay out of pocket (she could) you could get a D & C for fibroids (aka an abortion). So prior to the results coming back negative, she has scheduled a D & C for the above reason. So the rich will still get abortions in American hospitals, just expect to see a rise in D & C's for other reasons.

3. they can't ban it per se |
|
they can overturn Roe, thus making it an issue for the states decide.
Access to abortion will remain as it is today in many places, such as California, but will be severely limited in backwater states, such as Alabama. Just look at the potential cases trickling up to the Supreme Court - they are cases about severe limits that conservative states are trying to make into law. Once Roe is overturned, all these states can put restrictions into place, add parental notification, place limits on the timing of abortion, or outlaw it all together.
Scarily enough, they can also make it a crime for someone to take a minor to another state for an abortion.
I feel sorry for young women in the South....

8. Things aren't that great right now. I heard that only 15% of counties |
|
of the 50 states have access to abortion services. If it's essentially unavailable already in 85% of the country, the fundamentalists don't have a lot left to go after.

5. Safe Legal Abortions Are Old America |
|
In new America, any woman that gets raped and impregnated will have to carry the baby to term. Yes, that's right. A rape victim will have to carry the rapist's baby to term.

Those sick bastards! They actually believe pregnancies resulting from rapes is an act of god (hey, I didn't make this up. They said it themselves). A rather PERVERTED belief, wouldn't you say?

They don't give a shit about these cultural issues. The only thing they care about is lining the pockets of their corporate masters. All of this "moral" shit is just posturing -- they will ban abortion when they calculate that they will win more votes than they will lose by doing that, and that simply isn't likely.

9. I don't see them pursuing overturning Roe v. Wade. |
|
It's such a divisive issue that they can use as a weapon during elections. They attract more sympathy and passion from the voters in my area when they are in the mode of overturning something, rather than defending it.
Bush and his henchmen will continue to dangle Roe v. Wade to their stooges and make them think they're working on it, but I'll be shocked if it is overturned.
In the back of my church was a flyer from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Among other things, it noted that abortions steadily declined during the 1990s (Bill Clinton years), but have increased beyond projections since 2000 (Bush years). It tells me that reducing the number of abortions in this country goes beyond Roe v. Wade. It involves access to quality health care and making a living wage. The flyer urged Catholics to look at ALL issues when voting and not just one issue - abortion.

On one side i think they won't because doctors make big money from abortions, and they may want to support them. Then again, the republicans are quite stupid and they may want to topple womens rights and be fascist as much as they can! But what I really can't understand is the christians againist abortion, I suppose "killing" a fetus is MUCH worse than killing hundreds of live children a day in Iraq.

15. Not ONLY banish abortion, |
|
but they will completely gut environmental controls because the religious right and idiots like Ihnof, and Bill Frist believe that environmental controls are slowing down the second coming of Christ. They want to hasten environmental destruction. This is a VERY VERY Scary bunch of people. The situation we have with out government right now is WHY worse than anyone understands.
