It started out as a little list. After the charges about Bill Clinton and his morals leading to his impeachment, I noticed a web posting listing some
Republicans and
their moral indiscretions” (Hmmm. Indiscretions or choice?). I copied and saved it. Then I saw another one that had some new names. I merged the new ones into my file and named the file,
“Republican Family Values”. To be a listee, the candidate had to have done something morally or legally wrong, or something the Christian Evangelicals would absolutely burst a vein over.
Well, I guess it has become an obsession, and I never thought I would still be doing it. I collected and collected for a while now, every day taking a look at news stories to see if there were any new candidates. I was rarely let down. I was determined to make a post on this site when I hit a certain milestone, but other events got in the way and I didn’t get around to doing it. After a while I was forced to finally make a count to see how close I was to my marker.
I was off.
By a lot!
My milestone was to post when I had
500 names. Today, after a new count –
I have 644!! None of them duplicates.
Here is my first entry. Think this guy represents “Republican Family Values”?
Center for Family Values. Guess who's the director of this organization? It’s Jim Harnsberger, of San Diego. It just so happens that our first “Republican Family Values” winner was married
five times and owes $18,000 in support to the
child of his
third marriage.
Here’s one from yesterday:
Bush Presidential staffersOops! They did it again. President Bush's staffers have restored Gary Glitter's 1972 hit "Rock and Roll, Part 2" to their political playlist. I say restored because four years ago they used his music, thinking all the time that he must be a true “Republican Family Values” kind of Republican. And he is! Glitter just happens to be -
a convicted pedophile!Glitter - born Paul Gadd - plead guilty in 1999 to downloading 4,000 hard-core photographs of children, ranging from 2 to 10 years old, being sexually abused, a crime for which he spent four months in jail. While his music again plays at Bush rallies where the President kisses babies and shakes hands, there was
nothing but silence from the Bush camp, the
Christian Coalition, and the traditional-values group the
Family Research Council, that did not respond to requests for comment.

So, what have I learned?
First, I admit the file is biased. There is not one Democrat listed. I rationalize this by saying that it was the Republicans that made “Family Values” a campaign issue, and Christian ones at that. They made it an issue to solidify a base with Christian Evangelicals. They have done it for years, and they did it deliberately. I’m just pointing out the kettles to the pots.
Second, even if the list did include democrats, there would be damn few of them! One post I read said,
“But the fact is, that only a third as many scandals are known about Democrats in high office, as there are about Republicans.” The poster was right – and wrong. I think the ratio is far wider than that. While I do not search for democrat hypocrites, I do read each story to determine political affiliation, and I can tell you that I have discarded less than a dozen. It even surprises me.
