Daily U.S. Casualties 4/17/2004
As of Friday, 685 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq last year, according to the Department of Defense. Of those, 491 died as a result of hostile action and 194 died of nonhostile causes.
The British military has reported 58 deaths; Italy, 17; Spain, eight; Bulgaria, five; Ukraine, four; Thailand, two; Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia and Poland have reported one each.
Since May 1, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 547 U.S. soldiers have died -- 382 as a result of hostile action and 165 of nonhostile causes, according to the military. Since the start of military operations, 3,630 U.S. service members have been injured in hostile action.
There were no deaths reported by the military.
The latest identification reported by the military:
Army Sgt. William C. Eckhart, 25, Rocksprings, Texas; died Saturday from an explosion in Baqubah, Iraq; assigned to the 4th Cavalry, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.
Army Spc. Frank K. Rivers Jr., 23, Woodbridge, Va.; died Wednesday in Mosul after collapsing during physical training; assigned to 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.
