"Low intensity fascism"...
That's what I call the current state of affairs we have in this country.
*Where Presidents are selected, not by the people, but by right-wing collaborators on the Supreme Court.
*Where duly elected officials are subject to propaganda campaigns to un-elect said officials - case in point, Gray Davis.
*Where the Congress and therefore "the people assembled" are misled, lied to, and manipulated to engage in an imperialist invasion for booty using a national tragedy that is un-related as reason for said invasion.
*Where as Impeaching a President for a roving penis is a "high crime and misdemeanor", Faslifying and fabricating "intelligence" in order to mislead a nation to an unjust war is praised as being pragmatic.
*Where is the outrage?

4. Fear, it's all about fear
I have a theory that all social conservatism is based in fear. Just as racism, xenophobia, and jingoism are based in fear.

And we all know how racist, xenophobic, and jingoistic our favorite neocons can be.

Everytime I talk to anyone who is socially conservative (I make the distinction because I am fiscally conservative, but that is the only way I am conservative, and to me, that is a whole other animal...maybe someone will disagree...) all you have to do is scratch the surface a tiny bit to see the hatefulness pour forth. And hatefulness is almost always born out of fear.

Even the neocons who seem polite on the surface have it there, just bubbling underneath...

They are also almost always control freaks. Think about it. They want to control this, control that, everything is perceived as a threat (think homophobia as an example). But what they don't realize is that the people you can control in this life make up a VERY short list. Let's see:

1. Yourself
2. Your minor children, in a healthy and age-appropriate manner, that is, not complete or extreme control

Yeah, that's about it.

I also have a theory if they'd all just let go (of control, of hate, of fear), they'd be so much happier, and the world would be SUCH a lovely place....

Reject the "bleeding heart liberal" label. I reject all labels. Labels are a convenient way for other people to dismiss your notions. Instead, spread the word of tolerance in both your words and actions.

6. if they could
control themselves maybe they wouldn't feel so much fear. But I doubt they can.

"It never occurred to Nietzsche that the lust for power, with which he endows his superman, is itself an outcome of fear. Those who do not fear their neighbors see no necessity to tyrannize over them."
--Bertrand Russell, "A History of Western Philosophy"

8. Ah so you're gonna be that group
that starts the Matrix in motion with your robots and other nonsense. And secondly, who is going to determine the smartest people? Sure, you talk about the mathematical geniuses who build robots and stuff as the most intelligent, but people can be geniuses in english or anything. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses...all the intelligence doesnt lie with a few people.

9. I fear it is going to get allot worse.
There is not really a precedent for our current situation.
We seem to have devolved into a fascists/corporate oligarchy. Or maybe we always were. Its just more open now.

I think it WILL unravel eventually, but we need a smarter electorate not taken in by the myths put out by the Bush Admin. I think there is waning tolerance and support for Bush, but its not at the turning point yet. In time it Will be.

10. Fascism -- Full speed ahead
And I think they even know they are going to crash and burn. But who cares? They've got a pipeline of defense industry cash flowing from the wounds they've created in the Middle East.

Our entire country is being run by corporations, like corporations. And unfortunately, the corporation we most resemble is ENRON.

Sad to say, it is happening here. And it goes way back, somewhere around the time we ceased to be human beings and became human resources.

11. Implosion
Enough diversity of opinion exists within the conservatism to recognize that this current strain is pushing the country dangerously close to the edge. Most conservatives have an honest, if occasionally misguided, love of their country and a genuine desire to improve the society in which they live.
The Robertsons and Falwells represent a deeply toxic strand of capitalistic Christian conservatism, and the Cheyneys and Perles represent a toxic economic and militaristic conservatism; but they're not real conservatives. They are in politics or religion to line their own pockets or those of their friends, not out of any sense of idealism. Bush vacillates between them like a confused chicken.
I can only hope that many of his supporters are beginning to sense they're being led up the garden path. That idealistic conservatives like Buchanan are voicing those concerns indicates they're not all lock-stepping fascist bastards yet. God forbid it may take another four years, but they will implode eventually.
