I took him to task for religious bigotry, stating that it was beneath the honor of a tanker.

He called me a "lying-ass liberal" and questioned whether I had actually served.

The world - unfortunately - has far too many pricks of his kind.......angry people who are being eaten alive by their own bitterness, searching desperatly for an "enemy" to blame for their misery. Best thing you can do is call them on their bullshit when you see it -- just as you did -- and then quietly send them light and love in hopes that they will find a way out of the ugliness before it consumes them.

7. Yip, in '03 I found a webbring of my former shipmates from Vietnam

and after the first few months of good reminiscences, it became clear that their main activity was to circulate wingnut chain letters. For most of '04 with the campaign going on I attempted to debate and debunk, but it was clear I was the sailor alone with his seabag. So it came to the breaking off point, no way around it.

I'm a life member of the VFW but it's much the same story. I never went to a meeting where I would have to salute the jerks and then I switched over to the statewide generic post, no meetings, no contact except for their mailing the monthly magazine. Plus, in the '04 campaign the magazine's editor was clearly on the Swiftbot side. I got him on the phone and he tried to shout me down then just left me talking on a dead line.

That's the way it is. I'm glad for you and for me that we found DU.


On Edit: The only one who barely showed any chink in the wingnut propaganda wall said he had grown up in a Dem family and had been a Dem until his 30s when he claimed to be enlightened. And as for the John-WAYNE blusterers, they don't call it "John WAYNE" for nothing, since that dude didn't join up for WW II because he didn't want to break his career momentum, and he was despised by vets, was booed when he toured a military hospital in Hawaii.
