So I rented Bridesmaids. This could have been a great movie but they ruined it *Spoilers*
Mind you, it's Thanksgiving and I'm home alone because I'm sick as could be. And the Redbox pickings were pretty slim. So I decided to rent the movie.

Overall it had a great plot line. I've been in wedding parties where I had to deal with a 'Helen' - some overbearing friend that just wants to take over all the bridle planning even if she isn't Maid/Matron of Honor. And I thought the love story was very sweet between Kristin Wiig's character (the Maid of Honor who happens to be in a real bad rut in life) and the police officer she met (along with her low self-esteem fuckbuddy relationship with John Hamm).

But what really annoyed me about what could have been a great movie is the role they made for Melissa McCarthy. I know I've bitched about this before, but when you have a plus size actress in the movie or TV show you have to roll out all the wretched stereo-types associated with plus-size women. First, they built this role to mirror exactly what Zack Galhoweveryouspellhisname had in the Hangover series - future sibling-in-law is isn't as hot or socially adept as their sibling. It was funny with Zach G because he did it first but it was just sad and horrible how they put her in this role. If I were that actress I would have walked out.

First, she was a horrible dresser. Believe or not us Plus Size gals know how to shop, how to use makeup and how to keep ourselves pleasingly presentable. Then they made her into this oversexed beast that had no clue how to interact with other people. Probably the only redeeming value with this character was she tried to get the main character (Wiig) out of her rut and they did make her look beautiful in her bridesmaid dress at the wedding.

I remember the Hollywood complaint that women of color felt that the only roles available in Hollywood tended to be the maid or other degrading jobs. Although Hollywood is doing better in that aspect it seems they still feel that plus size people are meant to be ugly, farting, belching, socially disabled buffoons.

Really - could you do better please!

1. I didn't like it much, either, and I saw it last night.
I just didn't like the gross out bathroom humor or the awful squirmy embarrassing scenes like the toast to the bride, the airplane scene, etc. I hate "humor" like that.

The scene with Megan and Annie when Annie was back at her mom's was funny, but in general, you're right about the character they wrote for Megan.

2. I'm thinking back on all the other roles I've seen Melissa McCarthy in...
and none of them made her an ugly, farting, belching, socially disabled buffoon. I think that's why I found her so funny in Bridesmaids - it was so unexpected from her.
