So today I took my neighbor to HEB and Kroger's, I felt sorry for the people working.
The stores were packed, long lines to check out.

I would rather eat at Luby's then ever shop on Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

There were shopping cart wrecks, cars blocking the way.

Shoot me first.

1. Guess everyone was too busy or too broke to shop in advance. I mean, you know it's coming.

3. The turkey section was very busy.
I thought two guys were going to have a fight over a certain turkey.

Just take one and go.

I shop in advance of the day, I don't like crowds.

There were enough checkers, that helped.

13. I always like HEB's. And Randall's, but IDK if they still exist. The HEB nearest me was run out by..
Wlmart who did a real bait and switch all the retailers in that area. Super low prices which they kept up until the others went out of business. Then shot right up. Definitely a lack of understanding on the part of regulators on price fixing. A real problem and most people don't know that there was ever such a mechanism to prevent such closing down of smaller business. But then the GOP, who snivels about small business all the time, doesn't believe that, really.

2. HEB will be open on Thanksgiving til 2PM
Very surprising. I didn't think they were open before. My nephew has to work there tomorrow, but my sister (his mom) always had Thanksgiving on Wednesday, since her hubby was a police officer and he always worked on T-Day.

I bought a frozen turkey on Friday, but if I was going to get fresh, I would have been out there yesterday or today.

5. I have a friend who works at Walmart, she is working the whole weekend.
Early hours, late hours, all hours.

She really needs the money.

4. I had physical therapy and a routine lab test checkup at the hospital today...
.
.
.
... and on the way home, I stopped at my primary grocery store (not
really THINKING about what day it was and/or the potential mayhem).
.
.
.
It was early afternoon and it looked like a normal day -- though
they had a few extra cashiers on.
.
.
.
Even went to my bank -- no crowd there (I would imagine a LOT of
people got paid today -- usually payday Fridays exhibit themselves
in long lines at the bank).
.

7. These two stores are very popular.
I think a lot of people have the day off or half day.

It does seem like a Friday night.

8. Well, yeah, but there are worse things than working the holidays.
Heck, I used to do it. People usually arranged things around me as much as possible and I was really glad to have the money. My son manages a wine dept. right now and he's utterly swamped, but, as he says, the scrilla is killa. Union, doncha know.

9. That's the good thing about frozen turkey (plus it's like 39 cents/lb on sale!)
We did a "practice turkey" in advance of company & the real Thanksgiving so I thought I would practice on a frozen one -- it turned out delicious so we are getting the same for the real day!

Our first bbq'd turkey, delish!

10. I don't what was so speical about this one turkey.
There were a lot of them, all about the same size.

As long as I was there I bought a few extra turkeys for the Christmas and later.

I had a turkey frozen for over a year, it was still good.

I didn't want my first Webber Kettle turkey to be FAIL with a house full of guests. OMG when I had my first apartment I invited a lot of people over to my house for turkey. It turned out it would not fit in my cute little 1950's style apt. sized oven. I started hacking it up looking for tiny pans to cook parts of it in and ended up putting the whole mess in the freezer (made a lot of soup from it later though!) and getting pizza instead! It was not Thanksgiving so the change in menu was not too weird, but my mom had gotten me a free turkey with a 2 for 1 coupon, I had to charge the pizza on my AMEX.

I used to smoke turkeys until I started to fry them.
