49. The first record that was bought for me, that I remember,

was "It's A Small World" which, according to its jacket, was the official song of the 1964 New York World's Fair.

The first record I bought for myself was "Saint-Saens' Greatest Hits"

In those days, my world was indeed small--defined almost exclusively by mine and my grandparents' neighborhoods!

66. Same for me - that was the first really big trip we took when I was a kid

Until then it was the little town I grew up in, Sundays at Grandmother's house which was on a lake so we could swim in the summer, about twice a year, trips to Tampa.

That year Dad took us to Williamsburg, Washington (Smithsonian, Library of Congress, and a drive around the city), then New York for the World's Fair. Williamsburg was terrific since our entire family was into history. I loved the Smithsonian and if I ever go back to Washington, I'll probably spend a week there.

The coolest part of Washington other than the Smithsonian was visiting the Capitol. Grandmother was friends with with the wife of Senator Spessard Holland and Dad had made an appointment to go to his office and see him. Since it happened to be the day Sen. Holland was giving the opening prayer, he invited us to go to the Chamber with him so we could watch from the gallery.

He took us downstairs to the tunnel between the office building and the Capitol and herded us in front of him. The young clerk (about four years older than I was) running the elevator saw the Senator coming and tried to shoo the crowd of tourists out of his way. The Senator was a little stern when he told the clerk that we were with him. Poor kid!

We watched the opening prayer, then Sen. Holland Waved at us as we left. I'm sure some of the people were wondering if we were VIPs in disguise.

The World's Fair was interesting, but for me it was the worst part of the trip. The city was too noisy, both the city and the fair had too many people, and it flat out wore me out. (Then as now my idea of a good time was a walk through a wildlife area looking for birds and appreciating the quiet.) All of us Southern girls had trouble understanding New Yorker accents and they couldn't understand us - Dad had to "translate" for us.

For a "treat" Dad took us to an automat - Dad had loved those when he spent part of the war in NYC and wanted us to see what they were like. Here is how automats worked:

The one we visited looked exactly like that card!

On the way back we went through North Carolina and stopped by the John C. Campbell Folk School where my great aunt spent her summers. The Smoky Mountains were a wonderful way to decompress after all that city stuff.

Somewhere I have scans of the snapshots I took in Washington and at the World's Fair. I'll see if I can find them and post them online sometime. If I do, I'll post a link here.

That trip expanded my horizons, but it also made me appreciate what we had at home. Unfortunately only a few years later while I was away at college many of the areas I had ridden horses through were mined and the wetland and wildlife are no longer there.

It was REALLY interesting!
In 1964, I was just beginning to read, but had little concept of the world beyond neighborhoods and shopping places. A couple of years later, when I started collecting stamps and my grandmother gave me this stamp commemorating the 1964 New York World's Fair,



I started playing that record seemingly endlessly, pretending I was at that World's Fair! I even flipped it over and tried to figure out the words that were in the various foreign-language versions of the song-- French, German, Spanish, I think, but definitely also Japanese. The Japanese version seemed especially to be a lot of unintelligible gibberish. Now that I have spent a good deal of my life in Japan, I would love to be able to hear that record again and see if I could finally understand the Japanese version!
