Rolling Stone names Hendrix best guitarist ever

Legendary musician Jimi Hendrix was named the greatest guitar player in history Wednesday by Rolling Stone magazine in a list compiled by a panel of music experts and top guitar players.

‘Jimi Hendrix exploded our idea of what rock music could be: He manipulated the guitar, the whammy bar, the studio and the stage,’ said Grammy-winning guitarist Tom Morello in the magazine, citing Hendrix’s ‘Purple Haze’ and ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ as key tracks.

Hendrix is joined by the likes of Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Keith Richards, Jimmy Page and Pete Townshend among the top 10, in a list laden with rock ‘n’ roll icons spanning decades.

6. Townshend phoned up Clapton

after seeing Hendrix in London and said we are in trouble that guy is the best guitarist I have ever heard. Clapton went to see him shortly after and agreed that Jimmy was on a another planet.

7. It really has to be Jimi as far as the rock era goes..

He invented so much of the modern electric guitar's vocabulary. But the greatest guitarist of the modern era? Les Paul. Les invented the solid body guitar, overdubbing, and was as good a pure technical guitar player as anyone who ever lived. Hendrix built on what Les did and added his own innovations, but without Les, there's nothing.

I'd put Robert Fripp, Steve Howe, John McLaughlin and Eddie Van Halen right behind Jimi and in that order. Edit to add: I am not a big Van Halen fan, but Eddie is a virtuoso player and had a huge impact on other players.

8. I think this one is worse than the first time they did it.

Duane Allman no better than ninth? Stevie Ray and Mark Knopfler not in the Top Ten? On the other hand, it's nice to see Beck made it and that not everyone has forgotten about BB King and Chuck Berry.
