With the unemployment rate falling to its lowest level in more than two years, Congress needs to “step on the gas, not slam on the brakes” and pass a proposed payroll tax cut, President Barack Obama said in his weekly radio address broadcast Saturday.
Passing the tax cut would help the economy to grow, give middle-class Americans a $1,500 annual boost and allow small businesses to hire more employees, Obama said.
“We need to keep this growth going and strengthen it,” Obama said. “That’s why we’ve been fighting to pass a series of jobs bills through Congress - bills that independent economists say will create more jobs and grow the economy faster.”
Obama said Republicans on Capitol Hill don’t “share that same sense of urgency,” referring to their failure to support the measure.
