A few Trump supporters in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania might vote for a moderate white male Democrat, but thousands of liberals across the country who would have phone-banked and canvassed for a more exciting candidate might decide they’re too busy this time around. It’s hard work to volunteer; it’s hard to have people yell at you or slam the phone in your face; but it’s the GOTV operation that makes all the difference. I’ve canvassed in some very poor neighborhoods and remember how touched some people were that someone cared enough about their vote to go all the way to their trailer on a cold afternoon. Personal contact is known to be the buggest factor in whether a Democrat will actually vote on election day. And the vast majority of volunteers, at least in my experience, are female.
