In reply to the discussion: Why Libertarian Organizations Like The Cato Institute Love The NSA Outrage [View all]NuclearDem
(16,184 posts)13. Oh, for Christ's sake. Poli-sci 101 everybody.
Political ideologies and leanings can be scored a multi-axis model of the political spectrum, measuring left-right in terms of economics and authoritarian-libertarian in civil/social issues.
See? Four sectors: Authoritarian Left, Authoritarian Right, Libertarian Left, Libertarian Right.
Now for the fun, shocking part: Civil libertarians who believe in strong state control of the economy happen to agree on issues with civil libertarians who believe in very little state control of the economy.
Which is why I, a socialist with strong civil libertarian leanings, can be caught on the same side of the NSA scandal as the Cato Institute. It is not because I'm being played by the Koch brothers or right-wing corporate hacks.
