In Final Rally, Trump Tells Supporters: 'Today Is Our Independence Day' [View all]

By CAITLIN MACNEAL Published NOVEMBER 8, 2016, 7:14 AM EDT

Early Tuesday morning, Donald Trump made his final appeal to voters at a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where he pitched himself as a champion for the working class and hit on his tried-and-true topics like immigration.

"The corrupt politicians and their special interests have ruled over this country for a very long time," he told the crowd. "Today is our Independence Day. Today the American working class is going to strike back finally.”

Trump, who has painted a dark vision of America throughout his campaign, said Tuesday morning that Americans are "living in a divided nation" and promised to bring the country together.

"I’m asking you to dream big because with your vote we are just hours away from the change you’ve been waiting for your entire life. So to every parent who dreams for their child and to every child who dreams for their future, I say these words to you tonight: I am with you. I will fight for you. And I will win for you. I promise," he said.

The Republican nominee brought up his favorite topics in his final speech. He told the crowd that Mexico would pay for the wall, criticized Obamacare, slammed trade deals, and swore that he would keep Syrian refugees out of the country. And as he has throughout the race, Trump railed against the "corrupt" media, describing journalists as the "world's most dishonest people."

And Trump hinted at the disappointment he would feel if he lost, as he did at the end of October. "If we don’t win, this will be the single greatest waste of time, energy and money in my life," he told the crowd gathered in Michigan.
