2016 Postmortem

(3,003 posts)...first off, in 2008 we were comfortably ahead (and were for pretty much all of the campaign). We were ecstatic because the Bush-Cheney Era was coming to an end and we knew that we would soon have a Democratic President and a Democratic president in D.C.. However, this euphoria was tinged with apprehension and concern...our country was in crisis. Our economy had collapsed in Sept. 2008 was in a total freefall, with 750,000 jobs being lost every single month. The downturn continued well into Obama's first year in office.
Since our victory in 2008, we Democrats have been under a lot of pressure to "right the ship" from the public and under constant outrageous attacks from the tea party and those on the far right. Given how difficult things were in America during 2009-10 because of the economy, the hateful rhetoric from the tea-baggers resonated with the American people and we lost the House along with six seats in the Senate in the 2010 midterm elections.
Now, as the economy slowly but steadily improves, people are giving Obama a second look. Yes, the deficit has soared, but that happens anytime there is a major crisis such as a war or an economic collapse. However, Obama's accomplishments are quite notable: health care reform (upheld by the Supreme Court, ha-ha!), bin Laden is dead, ZERO terrorist attacks in the homeland, and 2+ years of positive private-sector job growth.
So no, it's hard to feel "euphoric" when we've been working so damn hard at trying to get America moving again, but that burden comes with the responsibility of governing. Tomorrow night we will feel a great sense of euphoria when we are vindicated for all of our hard work the past four years in the face of extreme adversity.
