4. Ah, teeth ... the study of fossil mammals is basically the study of teeth.

It's not just that there are whole taxonomic orders known entirely, or almost entirely, from fossil teeth. It's also that the evolution of teeth actually may have driven the evolution of other distinctly "mammalian" features.
