The rivets are also steel, and rivets do fracture.

The brittleness may not have had much importance without an iceberg collision, although it was very much an issue in the Liberty Ships.

My son told me, without reference, that no one actually believed that it was an issue until a Liberty Ship broke apart in New York Harbor on a very cold day.
