5. This adequately describes rural education in the South when I was a kid

Imagine your child being indoctrinated in a public school where he/she is legally mandated to attend. If they resist or protest, they are segregated by their peers on the playground, in the classroom, forget sports.


The zealots would indoctrinate their kids to harass anyone who did not believe as they believed. If you were ever identified as any religion other than their particular denomination(Southern Baptist), you were hounded relentlessly. Coming out as atheist was unthinkable. Meanwhile teachers and anyone else in authority either were part of it, or turned a blind eye to it.

One of the biggest problems with religion is the crank magnetism. And while certainly the majority of believers aren't cranks, they never seem to have much problem with the cranks. If anything their silence provides cover for them.
