regarding The Stand

I know it manifests into a Good vs Evil story, right?
But in the early part much of humanity dies of kind of suffocating illness?
I want to avoid that part!
[besides a natural human aversion, my mom had severe asthma after I was about 5 1/2 trs old. ]
