the children’s crusade
clustered in all ignorance tattered thin and wane
milling and impotent following a delusion’s call
massing in all innocence embracing the insane
to huddle hungry swallowing to creep and crawl
the children are sent forth while predators gaze
biting rain piercing wind becoming their reward
an unsure unplanned course into history’s haze
claim piety to pretend an endless march forward
only to be sold into slavery raped and murdered
abandoned to god’s fate tossed on the wasteheap
an existence of pure bravery lost courage nurtured
locked from heaven’s gate caste into a dark deep
where history turns to words and then into pages
where mystery turns absurd among the mute sages
