Some places in the world the military are a special class. Not in the US.

Every vet and active duty service member I've encountered sees themselves as civilians first with their role being a volunteer in service to others. In the very unlikely event that the military is set upon the free people, there will likely be another revolution but don't worry about it. Most of them will be on my side, on our side.

This quote from long ago is the best articulation of my feelings, "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them."
