My grandfather was born in 1887. His father lived in a time when passenger pigeons were common. There were an estimated 5 billion of them. It was said that a massive flock a mile wide and 310 miles long, took fourteen hours to pass. Old timers called the pigeons the living wind.

They went extinct about 1910. Hunting and habitat loss wiped them out.
