Ford and GM didn't force us to buy cars and General Electric didn't demand we install electric lights. We did this all on our own in the call of ease, efficiency and, of course, laziness.

Progress is slow, and if it took us two centuries to progress through coal and oil, how long will it take to tear down our Petro infrastructure to move on to... something else.
