Right now, if you have coverage, you're paying for it. It's not free no matter from whence it comes.
The idea behind the mandate for the ACA was to bring down costs based on the size of the pool.
The trouble was that people insisted upon keeping the coverage they have for fear of whatever new coverage they got being inferior.
Whatever.
Universal health care dissolves the private insurance market. Tough beans but its time has passed.
The costs associated with present coverage disappears and the cost to cover the new program reappears as a tax.
The notion that taxes would be higher neglects the fact that the outlay to private insurers is MORE than the tax would be.
