On an iPhone you can touch and hold the photo in a text message and a menu pops up that let's you save the picture. It's then saved in your photos. In photos you can email it to yourself. There are other ways from photos like saving to Dropbox if you use that but emailing it to yourself always works. Then you can save the photo as an attachment on your computer.

I assume you can follow a similar procedure on an Android phone.

iCloud for Windows is another option you might want to check out. It will allow you to synchronize iPhone or iPad photos with a folder on you PC. You still have to save photos in text messages as I described above.
