is offloading the pictures from the phone to a computer and then resizing them for the web. The images on the phone are probably going to have a resolution several times higher than the native resolution of most screens, so there probably isn't much need to have them stored online in full resolution, and storing them online sized more appropriately for the resolution of the average screen will save a considerable amount of storage space in the cloud.

Obviously, you would probably want to create new files resized for the web, rather than resizing and overwriting the originals. That way you will still have available the high resolution versions from which to do any prints or such, as well as the smaller versions for the cloud.
