The Long Island Press should know better than to put that (D) after his name.

Clavin resigned before his term was up so that a Republican could be appointed and gain an incumbency advantage in what would have been an open race for Hempstead Town Supervisor.

Hempstead GOP Supervisor Donald X. Clavin Jr. to run for judgeship, wins cross-endorsements

Republican Hempstead Town Supervisor Donald X. Clavin Jr. will run in November to be a Nassau County judge and will be cross-endorsed by both parties, County GOP Chairman Joseph Cairo said Tuesday.

Nassau County Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs confirmed Clavin is being cross-endorsed.

Donald X. Clavin, Jr., native of Garden City, New York, is the current Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead in Long Island, New York. First elected the Receiver of Taxes of the Town of Hempstead in 2001 as a Republican, he ran in 2019 against Democratic incumbent, Laura Gillen, for Supervisor of the Town of Hempstead. He was elected in a Republican wave in 2019, where other Democratic incumbents also lost. He was re-elected in November 2021.

Clavin Resigns As Hempstead Supervisor
He made the announcement during a Town Board meeting on Tuesday.

HEMPSTEAD, NY — Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin stepped down from his position during the Town Board meeting on Tuesday.

snip-------------------------------

Clavin earlier this year stated he would not seek a fourth term as Hempstead Supervisor. But Clavin is not ready to end his political life as he's running to become a Nassau County Justice this fall.

Republican selected Legislator John Ferretti, of Levittown, to run as Hempstead Supervisor.

“Today, Don Clavin made the difficult decision to step down after 24 years as an elected official in the Town of Hempstead. As a result of his sudden resignation, the Hempstead Town Board installed John Ferretti as Supervisor," said Brian Devine, Town of Hempstead Director of Communications. "This action, which has been used by both Democrats and Republicans in various municipalities, ensures continuity of services for residents of America’s largest township."

Laura Gillen, who Clavin defeated in 2019 for town supervisor, is currently the NY-4 representative in the House. The DCCC designated NY-04 as a frontline seat.
