Florida AG launches public reporting tool for teacher social media posts [View all]

The Big Story: Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced Monday that he was launching a new tool for members of the public to report “acts or threats of political violence.” And teachers are squarely in the state’s crosshairs.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, Education Commissioner Anastasios Kamoutsas said that “any educator who makes vile, despicable comments celebrating and encouraging violence in schools will be investigated and held accountable.” He said the portal would further the state’s goal of having “the highest quality teachers” in charge of classrooms.

The Tallahassee Democrat reported that Uthmeier said the office will investigate threats reported, and that while the First Amendment will be upheld, threats of violence won’t be tolerated.

The portal was launched amid growing scrutiny around social media posts — particularly from educators — in the wake of conservative activist Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
