In the early 1950s, when I was 9 and 10, my neighborhood pals and I took turns throwing knives into the ground, near each other's bare feet. The target kid of each game moved a hand or foot to where the knife was, and then it was his or her (ok, I was the only girl) to throw the knife. It was an early version of Twister.
Sometimes my mom's favorite paring knife was The Knife. A few times, it got bloody, so I rinsed it under the kitchen sink faucet, dried it on my shirt, and put it away. Mom never knew, but a time or two she wondered why I was wearing socks with my sandals, and why I was limping.
