First we had hand typesetting. You had a bunch of little blocks of metal with letters on them. You had to arrange the little blocks into lines of type, then set the lines into a frame. If you ran out of a particular letter you had to go in the back room and make some more.

Next came the Linotype machine. It dropped letter molds into a frame and poured molten lead into them. Linotype operators didn’t live too long because of the lead fumes.

And finally there was Compugraphic. It output a strip of photo paper with text on it, which you glued to a layout board.

Being able to design a whole page on a computer and send it to a machine that makes printing plates is way more pleasant.
