I've done it this way almost from the start. I play two words that collectively contain all the vowels and frequently-used consonants.

It maximizes the number of letters that can be eliminated and then you narrow down from there. You rearrange any yellow squares as needed and then typically there aren't that many possibilities from the remaining consonants.
