3. I clean each cold air return

with a damp cloth going in as far as I can reach. Following that I place a piece of disposable filter material on the inside of the vent to pre-filter the air before it arrives at the furnace. These are replaced every three months and you would be surprised just what a cheap filter in the right place will catch.
