6. The worship of cars in this culture, and the resulting dependence on them,

is a huge factor in nearly all our problems, from mental health issues to climate change to income inequality to crime to on and on and on.

There's a perfect example of cars as king in the small city where I used to live. Years ago a private health care company built office and clinic space for local practitioners, many of whom promptly moved their practices. The buildings, located in the center of a huge parking lot (for which farm land and some wetlands had to be paved over) can only be reached via a four lane highway. No sidewalks, and virtually no mass transit. So people who need the services--including wheelchair users who need to visit a clinic there to be fitted for a chair--need access to a car. Buy one, or rent one in the form of a cab or Uber, otherwise.... No way you can walk there without risking life and limb.

It's absurd, it's wasteful, it's inhuman, and it should not be allowed to happen.

But that's America for you.

Sidebar to this rate:

I HATE car commercials. They always show people cruising along on near empty highways through gorgeous scenery. And then for the "rugged" types there are ads for ATVs or what have you churning through the wilderness trashing the ground, blasting through streams. Such BS. Such ugliness. Such a total disrespect for the natural world.
