An SOS signal would be based on the pattern of, and the timing between, the knocking sounds. I think if it was recognized as an SOS we would already know about that. I don't know about ship traffic in that part of the Atlantic but ships are noisy beasts and perhaps that's the origin of the noises. It's a mystery layered on another mystery.
