4. Probably not that telling an indicator

Racists, by and large, have the attitudes that they do because their world views are very limited. I grew up in Central Illinois, where most farmers were white, but they knew (and often had very good relationships with) black people in their communities. This is because, from their perspective, these same black people knew their place. The blacks that terrified them were the ones they'd seen depicted on the Tee-Vee, the ones that were violent and dangerous and, most importantly, didn't know their place. They believe that the people who call them racists simply don't see the blacks that they know, and so are stupid in their assessments.

That doesn't excuse the bigotry, but in their minds it justifies it.
