Hoover made it a point to gather - and at yooge taxpayer expense - dirt on all whos-who in Washington, big business, religion, and entertainment.

He could've written whole books about the sex habits (and other pecadillos, including monetary) of every president, congresscritter, governor, CEO, Hollywood A-lister, and prominent clergy of his day (especially Cardinal Spellman - as he was a big believer in keeping an eye on friends).

And they knew it.

JFK came the closest to firing his ass - but, there was a but:

There was a well-known anecdote about JFK, calling Hoover into the Oval Office sometime in '63 - ready to fire him.

"I suppose you know why I called you in heah, Mr. Hoovah," the President began.

"I'm well aware, Mr. President. So I came prepared."

Hoover pulled out a reel tape player from his briefcase, pressed play - and, ooh boy, you can imagine...

"You were saying, Mr. President?" Hoover oozed.

Kennedy, paper-white, swallowed hard. "We'll speak again, Mr. Hoovah."

They never did.
